Getting Home After Midnight

The night ends. The ride hunt starts. 1 a.m., Bangla, phone on 9%. Every tuk-tuk can smell it. Here's how not to pay the last-minute price.

  1. The app window

    Before 1 a.m. it's easy.

Grab is usually fine in Patong until about 1 a.m., thinner from 1 to 3, a gamble after 3.

Book before the last round, not after

  2. Grab vs Bolt

    Bolt is often cheaper.

Often 20–30% under Grab, but with fewer cars. Open both and take whichever shows up first.

Loyalty to an app is for amateurs

  3. Tuk-tuk maths

    No meter. Price first.

Inside Patong roughly 200–300 baht. Patong to Karon or Kata roughly 400–600. Later means higher.

Agree the price and the headcount before you sit

  4. Pickup point

    Walk out of Bangla first.

Drivers can't reach the walking street. Walk a few minutes off the road, then request the pickup.

The Rat-U-Thit end is your friend

  5. The group

Nobody goes home alone by accident.

Match plate and driver in the app. Keep 20% battery. Count heads before the door shuts.

The loudest friend is usually the missing one
