Kata to Patong and Back

The Karon coast road at night

Kata and KaronChecked October 20263 min read

Ten kilometres. Twenty minutes in theory. The coast road between Kata and Patong is easy to book and hard to get home from. This guide is about the second part.

Karon, a Friday, 10:50 p.m. Two friends from Manchester stand at the side of the coast road with their phones in the air, comparing app prices and arguing about whether a 450 baht fare is "a rip-off or just Friday."

It's Friday. I've had this conversation.

The route. About 10 km from Kata to Patong, along the Karon coast road and over Karon Hill, which is steep with hairpin bends. In the daytime it takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes. At night, with traffic, rain or a closed lane, it can take much longer.

Going out is easy. Plenty of cars, plenty of drivers, plenty of bookings. Most people leave their hotel in Kata at 8 or 9 p.m., arrive in Patong by 9:30 and begin the night.

Coming back is the problem. After midnight:

  • Fewer drivers are heading toward Kata. They'd rather work in Patong.
  • Prices rise when the clubs empty and everyone books at once.
  • Waiting times grow. A ten-minute wait at 10 p.m. becomes forty minutes at 2 a.m.

What it costs. Check the live quote both ways. The return is often later, busier and costlier, and surge pricing can push it well above the outbound fare. Many people solve this by not coming back at all.

The trick most people use. Book a hotel in Patong for the night of the big Bangla evening. It looks expensive on paper, but compared with a late fare, a lost hour and the risk of sitting in the rain, it's often cheaper and always calmer.

If you do come back:

  1. Book early. At the first sign you want to leave, not at the last drink.
  2. Use a car, not a scooter taxi. Karon Hill is steep and the bends are tight. At night it's dark and in rain it's slippery.
  3. Confirm the plate and the driver. Say the destination out loud. Share your trip.
  4. Never ride after drinking. Not a scooter you've rented, not a friend's bike. The coast road is not a place to be brave.

Don't ride the hill at night. I'll be blunt. The hill's hairpins have poor sightlines, a cliff on one side, and plenty of drivers who've been working since morning. By day it's a scenic road. By night it's a test.

The insider habit. The sensible Kata locals who go to Patong take a car there, and a car back, and often plan the return when they book the outbound ride. Some even pre-agree the time with a driver they know. It's the opposite of spontaneous, and it works.

The honest summary. Kata to Patong is a fine night. Kata to Patong and back at 3 a.m. is a negotiation. Plan the ride home, or book a bed.

Next in Kata Karon Viewpoint at Night It's a very beautiful viewpoint. It also has the sort of road you want to see with the sun up. This is an honest guide, which means it's shorter than the one you hoped for. 3 min read
