The Patong Pickup Map
Where to stand so the driver can find you
Every night, thousands of people in Patong open a ride app and drop the pin exactly where they're standing. Every night, hundreds of drivers can't reach them. This is the fix.
Patong, 12:40 a.m. A woman in a sparkly top is holding her phone up in the air as if it might improve the signal. Her friend is arguing with a tuk-tuk driver about 100 baht. A driver on the app is three streets away, watching his arrival time not change.
I've watched this scene so often I could direct it.
The rule that fixes most of it. Don't request a ride inside Bangla Road after about 6 p.m. The road is closed to vehicles, so the driver can't get in, and the app can't tell you that. Walk out first, then book.
The four pickup dots I use:
- The Rat-U-Thit and Bangla junction, near the big mall. The best one. Lots of light, lots of cars, lots of taxis queuing. Stand on the mall side, away from the corner, and the driver can see you.
- The mall frontage. Wide road, bays for vehicles, easy to describe to a driver in a sentence.
- The 24-hour convenience store on the beach road. A good fallback if you're on the beach end. Bright, with a pavement you can stand on without being in a lane.
- The base of Patong Hill, on the Phra Baramee side. The point where cars heading to Kathu and beyond begin. Useful if your trip is going over the hill anyway.
Tell the driver where you are in words. Don't just trust the pin. Send one line: "In front of the mall, by the convenience store, wearing a red shirt." Drivers read these. It feels silly. It works.
What it costs. Fares move with the route, the hour and demand, so check the live quote in the app before you book:
- Peak evenings cost noticeably more than the same trip at 9 p.m.
- Longer trips (Kata, Phuket Town, Kamala) are where the surge hurts most. Compare before you confirm.
- Tuk-tuks quote first, and high. Ask the price before you get in, and agree it out loud.
After midnight, everything slows down. Waits get longer, drivers cancel more, and the surge goes up when the clubs empty. Book as soon as you've decided to leave, not as soon as you're outside. Order the car from your table, then finish your drink.
Three small rules:
- Confirm the plate and the driver's name before you get in. Say the destination out loud, don't just say "yes."
- Share your trip with a friend. It takes four seconds.
- If you've been drinking, don't take a scooter taxi. Take a car.
The insider shortcut. Walk two minutes in any direction away from Bangla before you book. The price often drops, the driver arrives faster and the whole process goes from an argument to an app. The walk is the cheapest upgrade in Patong.
The honest summary. The pickup map isn't about finding the cheapest ride. It's about being somewhere a car can actually reach, at a time when you can still explain where you are.
