Phuket Species 03
The Sponsor
Known example: Graham. Primary equipment: spreadsheet.

Natural Habitat
Condo dining table.
Laptop open.
Banking app nearby.
One tab permanently titled something like:
“Monthly Thailand.”
Field Signs
Columns.
Dates.
Transfers.
Rent.
Phone.
Dentist.
Motorbike.
“Misc.”
Every payment has a category.
Every category has an explanation.
He does not calculate the total very often.
Core Belief
Graham does not object to spending money.
He objects to the possibility that the spending means something.
So the spreadsheet exists partly to control costs and partly to preserve the narrative that he is not, under any circumstances, a sponsor.
The spreadsheet quietly disagrees.
Typical Arc
Month One:
“It’s just helping.”
Month Two:
“She had a difficult month.”
Month Four:
“This one is different because we’re actually together.”
Month Six:
Creates conditional formatting.
Behavioural Notes
The Sponsor is not necessarily being manipulated.
He may know exactly what he is doing.
The comedy appears when he constructs increasingly elaborate definitions to explain why the exact same arrangement would be “sponsoring” if anyone else did it.
