The Sponsor Audit

Graham did not mind helping Fon.

He minded helping inefficiently.

After six months of transfers, he built a spreadsheet.

Rent. Motorbike. Mother. Dental. Phone. Emergency.

The spreadsheet made him feel less like a sponsor and more like a financial controller with emotional exposure.

During his next visit, Graham opened the laptop at breakfast.

Fon stared at the colored columns.

“What this?”

“Just clarity.”

He had noticed the motorbike required three repairs in five months. Her rent appeared twice in June. One emergency had the same amount as a previous emergency but a different cousin.

Fon listened carefully.

Then she opened her phone.

She showed him his messages from the previous year.

I will always take care of you.

Don’t worry about money.

Tell me whenever you need anything.

Graham recognised the words. They had been written late at night, usually after wine, when generosity felt cheaper.

“That’s not the point,” he said.

It was exactly the point.

He believed the transfers were evidence of her dependence.

Fon believed they were evidence of his promises.

Neither had kept accounts until Graham introduced Excel.

They reviewed every payment.

The third motorbike repair was real. The duplicated rent was a deposit. The cousin remained unverified.

Graham removed one red flag and added two notes.

At the bottom of the sheet, he created a new category:

Relationship expenses.

Fon looked at the total.

“Very expensive girlfriend,” she said.

Graham smiled despite himself.

“Very detailed boyfriend.”

The audit ended without a breakup.

Future emergencies, however, would require receipts.
