The Bell

Nobody explained the bell to Martin.

That was partly because everyone assumed somebody else had. Mostly, it was because watching a new arrival discover the bell is one of the few remaining forms of live entertainment in Patong.

He had been in the bar for forty minutes. A woman called Ploy had remembered his name, laughed at two average jokes and persuaded him to buy her a lady drink.

Martin understood the system. He was not naïve.

Then he noticed the brass bell above the counter.

“What happens if I ring it?”

Ploy smiled. The cashier looked up. Even the pool game slowed down.

“You can ring,” Ploy said.

This was permission, not an explanation.

Martin pulled the rope.

The bar erupted.

For twelve glorious seconds, he was the most popular man in Phuket. Staff cheered. Customers raised their glasses. A man from Birmingham slapped him on the back and called him a legend.

Then the lady drinks began appearing.

One for Ploy. One for her friend. One for the cashier. One for the woman who had been in the bathroom when the bell rang. The Birmingham legend ordered whisky because generosity is easiest when somebody else has started it.

Martin watched small paper chits accumulate beside his beer.

“The bell buys everyone a drink?” he asked.

Ploy tilted her head.

“Now you know.”

The bill was 8,892 baht.

Martin paid without complaining. Pride is expensive, but losing it publicly costs more.

At sunrise, he walked back toward his hotel alone while the staff counted drink tokens behind the bar.

The next evening, Martin returned.

He sat at the same stool, ordered one beer and kept both hands below the counter.
