The Beach Club Accountant
Sophie did not mind expensive afternoons. She minded inaccurate mathematics.

Sophie did not mind expensive afternoons.
She minded inaccurate mathematics.
At a Bang Tao beach club, six people ordered lunch, three men ordered bottles and one man announced that they would “sort it out later.”
Later arrived with a bill for 78,450 baht.
Suddenly, nobody remembered ordering anything.
The man who selected the champagne believed the table should split everything equally. The woman who had consumed sparkling water disagreed. Another man had invited two girls whose names he no longer knew but felt they should contribute somehow.
Sophie opened the calculator on her phone.
She separated the food, bottles, mixers and the cigar nobody had seen being smoked.
The mood changed.
People who had spent four hours displaying wealth became unexpectedly interested in precision.
“You don’t need to pay,” one man told her.
“I know,” Sophie said. “I’m calculating what you need to pay.”
This was worse.
Twenty minutes later, she had assigned every item to its owner. Even the missing cigar.
The loudest man paid last. He added a large tip while everyone watched, restoring some of the financial confidence he had lost during the calculations.
Sophie paid exactly her share.
The group immediately ordered another bottle. Nobody wanted it, but leaving after doing mathematics would have made the afternoon feel finished.
By sunset, every account was balanced.
Except, perhaps, the social one.
