For six years it was "my villa." Since August it's "the place I'm renting."

Bow has worked the bar at the beach end of the road for four years, long enough to know which customers are telling a story and which ones are telling the same story again.

Lars is the second kind. Fifty-five, Swedish, eight years on the island. For six of them, Bow has heard about the villa.

"My villa." "Up at my villa." "When you've got a villa, you think differently about time." The villa is on the hill. It has a pool, a gate with a remote, and a view he describes the same way every time, with his hand, as if he's stroking the horizon. He also has a company. He doesn't say much about the company, except that it's "the smart way to do it here," and that the people who don't do it the smart way are naive.

Then, in August, the news was full of police visiting companies where the Thai shareholders didn't seem to know they were shareholders.

Bow noticed the change the way you notice a song has stopped. Nobody announced it.

The first week of August, Lars said "up at the house."

The second week, "up at my place."

By September he was saying "the place I'm renting." He said it casually, at full volume, to a man from Melbourne who hadn't asked. The man from Melbourne said, "Oh, I thought you owned it?" and Lars laughed for slightly too long and said, "In Thailand? Come on, mate. Foreigners can't own land."

The gate remote still sits on the bar next to his phone every evening. He hasn't adjusted that part of the story yet.

On a Tuesday in October his phone rings, and Bow sees the name before he turns it over. *Ae*. He takes the call outside, by the motorbikes, with one hand over his other ear.

Bow knows Ae. Of course she does. They were in the same class at school, two years running. Ae is the cousin of the woman Lars was with when he arrived. She works at a bank in town. For six years her name has been on some papers in a drawer in a lawyer's office, under a word she had to look up the first time: *shareholder*.

Ae's mother tells the whole market that her daughter owns a villa. Ae has never been inside it.

Lars comes back in looking like he's been out in the sun too long, even though it's eight in the evening.

"She just wanted to ask," he says to nobody, "whether she should come to the land office. Very polite. 'Should I come to the land office, Khun Lars?'" He shakes his head. "Like it's nothing."

Bow wipes the bar.

On Thursday afternoon, before Lars's usual hour, Ae comes in herself, in her bank uniform, and orders a lime soda. She sits at the far end. Bow pours it and sits with her for a minute, because it's quiet and because they were in the same class.

"Is he upset?" Ae asks in Thai.

"He's saying 'the place I'm renting' now."

Ae laughs once, without much fun in it. "My mother's still saying 'my daughter's villa.'"

They sit with that for a while.

"I'm not angry with him," Ae says. "I just don't want my name on something I don't understand. Not now. Not with my job."

"What will you do?"

Ae finishes her soda and puts her phone on the bar between them.

"Do you know a good lawyer?" she asks. "Not his. Mine."

Bow does. She writes the name on the back of a coaster and slides it over. Ae puts it in her purse and leaves before six.

At seven Lars arrives, puts the gate remote down next to his phone, orders his usual, and turns to a young couple from Stockholm who have just told him they're thinking of buying something here.

He gives them his most serious face, the one he uses for the horizon.

"Whatever you do," he says, "never put anything in somebody else's name."

> SENSITIVITY FLAG (v2 8.2, needs second review before publishing): Pure fiction. It refers only generally to the 2026 nominee-company crackdown in Phuket. It must not echo any real raided company, person or location, and must not read as advice on structuring ownership. The hill is unnamed on purpose.
