On his final morning, Robert placed 20,000 baht in an envelope.

He did not write Fon’s name on it. That would have made the gesture feel transactional.

Instead, he left it beside the hotel kettle with a note.

For you. Until I come back.

Robert considered the wording romantic.

Fon considered the amount.

They had spent seventeen days together. He had paid the bar fine most nights, taken her to Phi Phi and listened carefully to the story of the beauty salon she wanted to open.

The envelope was not payment, he told himself.

It was support.

Support is money with a better emotional vocabulary.

At the airport, Fon held him tightly. Robert promised to return in December. She promised to wait.

Both meant it at the time.

Three weeks later, Robert noticed she was working again.

He called immediately.

“I thought the money meant you could stop.”

Fon looked genuinely surprised.

Her rent was 9,000. Motorbike 3,200. She had sent 5,000 home. The remainder had lasted nine days.

Robert had imagined buying four months of distance from the bar.

He had funded slightly more than a week of ordinary life.

“How much do you need?” he asked.

It was the question he had been trying not to ask.

Fon did not answer immediately.

She had learned that a precise number sounded commercial and no number sounded manipulative.

“Up to you,” she said.

Robert hated those three words.

He opened his banking app anyway.

The envelope had been a goodbye gift.

The transfer was the beginning of the actual arrangement.

The receipt went straight into his wallet. On the walk out, he told the group not to worry about it. Farang Economics · Rawai · 3 min
