Nok knows it is becoming serious because she has acquired a green circle.

It appears around Tom's Instagram profile while she is sitting behind the bar in Patong, peeling the label off a water bottle. She opens his Story. It is a picture from the night before: two plates, two drinks, her hand resting beside his.

Close Friends.

She looks at it again before the next customer comes in.

Tom has been in Phuket for twelve days. He is thirty-nine, works in something that involves airports and wears linen shirts with the confidence of a man whose washing is being done by a hotel. He asks about her day and remembers the name of her dog.

More importantly, he does small things in public. Waits while she finishes work. Carries her bag without making a joke. Lets the taxi driver see her sleeping against his shoulder.

Nok has dated men who were generous in a room and suddenly very concerned about discretion in a restaurant. Tom seems different. There she is on his phone, visible to people who presumably matter.

She does not ask who is on the list. Asking would spoil the ease of it.

Over the following week, their relationship develops through selected audiences. A breakfast. A short video from his balcony. Her laugh behind the camera while he fails to open a coconut.

On his main profile, Tom posts a boat.

The distinction registers, but she gives it a reasonable explanation. Some people are private. His work is complicated. He has already told her he dislikes putting his whole life online.

One night she tags him in a photograph. He asks her to take it down.

Not angrily. Almost tenderly. There are people back home who like to make things difficult, he says. He doesn't want anyone interfering with something good.

Something good is an effective phrase. It makes removing the photograph feel like protecting a relationship instead of concealing one.

Two days later, Nok is having lunch with a friend who met Tom at the same bar. The friend asks when the woman from his pictures is arriving.

Nok stops mixing chili into her rice.

They open his profile on the friend's phone. Same boat. Same balcony. Further down, a Christmas photograph with a woman beside him and a dog Nok has heard plenty about.

The caption reads: Christmas with my wife.

Nok opens Instagram on her own phone. A green circle is waiting. Inside it, Tom has posted the breakfast they shared that morning.

For several seconds, the two screens lie side by side on the table. On one, she is part of his life. On the other, she has never arrived.

When he messages later, she asks him directly.

He says things at home are complicated.

She believes that part.

Then she removes him from her Close Friends list. It takes less time than deleting the photograph did.

On her next Story, she posts her lunch. Everyone is allowed to see it.
