The Last Night Rule
They agreed not to make the final night emotional.

They agreed not to make the final night emotional.
It was a sensible rule, established on their third day together, when both were still pretending twelve days was a long time.
No airport goodbye. No promises. No conversations beginning with “What are we?”
For eleven days, the arrangement worked perfectly.
They rode to Nai Harn, ordered too much food in Rawai and spent several evenings doing absolutely nothing in his hotel room, which is usually when something casual starts becoming inconvenient.
On the final night, neither mentioned the flight.
His suitcase remained open on the floor. Her helmet stayed beside the door. They ordered dinner and watched half a film without following the plot.
At 2 a.m., he asked whether she would visit him in London.
“That sounds emotional,” she said.
At 4 a.m., she left.
He had expected her to break the rule.
She had expected the same from him.
The next morning, he took a Grab to Phuket Airport alone and posted a photograph of the departure gate with no caption.
She viewed it within thirty seconds.
She did not reply.
Three hours later, somewhere above India, he finally messaged her.
“I already miss you.”
Her answer arrived when he landed.
“You made the rule.”
He stared at the message before replying.
“I thought we were both going to ignore it.”
“So did I,” she wrote.
By then, unfortunately, they had both followed it perfectly.
