By the ninth morning, there are two iced coffees on the table.

Stefan did not buy them. Kwan brought them up from the 7-Eleven at the bottom of the building, along with a bag of pork skewers, a phone charger he did not ask for and a small packet of washing powder, which she placed on the shelf above his sink as if the shelf had always been waiting for it.

He notices the washing powder more than the coffee.

Stefan is forty-four and has rented a one-bedroom condo in Kata for a month. In Düsseldorf, his last girlfriend told him he was impossible to live with. She said it calmly, while dividing the cutlery.

In Kata, he appears to be extremely easy to live with.

Kwan's helmet sits on the dining table. Her heels have settled beside the bed. There is a second toothbrush in the cup, a hair tie on the bathroom tap and, since Tuesday, a folding drying rack on the balcony with two of his T-shirts and one of her dresses hanging in the sun.

Nobody discussed any of this.

The relationship simply acquired furniture.

They met at the dive shop where Kwan works the front desk. He wanted to book a two-day course. She explained that he would need a medical form, a deposit and, judging by his shoulders, a stronger sunscreen. He did the course. He did not do the second one. He came back to the shop four times to ask questions he already knew the answers to.

Now, in the evenings, she sits cross-legged on his sofa, scrolling through LINE while a Korean drama plays on his laptop. He cooks pasta in a kitchen with one pan. She tells him it is too salty and eats all of it.

On the twelfth night, she calls the condo "our room".

Stefan hears it from the shower and stands very still, the way men do when a sentence sounds bigger than it was.

He begins to think in plural. Our room. Our balcony. Our 7-Eleven. He starts researching long-stay visas. He tells a friend at home that he has found something "very normal", which is the most romantic word available to a German man.

What he does not notice is that none of the normal things are actually happening.

The maid comes on Mondays and Thursdays. The laundry goes to a shop on the corner and comes back folded for forty baht a kilo. The landlord is an app. The electricity is included. There is no recycling to argue about, no relatives on Sunday, no winter, no tax letter, no one asking whether he remembered to call the plumber.

He has fallen in love with domestic life at the exact moment domestic life has been outsourced.

On day twenty, Kwan mentions her apartment.

Not as a confession. As logistics.

She shares it with her sister in Chalong. She has kept paying her half. Her scooter is registered there. Her work uniforms are there. When Stefan leaves, she will go back there, because, she says, "When you go, I need my room."

She says it kindly. She is buttering toast.

Stefan realises she was never confused about anything. The helmet, the heels, the drying rack: it was not moving in. It was visiting with good organisation.

He was the one who moved in. Into a version of himself who is relaxed, generous and pleasant at breakfast, who never has to discover whether he is still impossible to live with, because nothing here requires him to live.

That evening, he extends the condo for another month.

He tells Kwan it is for the diving.

She raises an eyebrow, collects the two empty coffee cups and throws them into the bin by the door, where tomorrow, at eleven, someone else will empty it.
