The Return Ticket

Martin changed his flight twice.
The first time was romantic.
He had met Ploy nine days earlier, and leaving on Sunday suddenly felt like abandoning a future they had not yet discussed.
He paid the change fee and stayed another month.
The second extension was practical.
They had rented a condo together, his laptop worked perfectly from Phuket and the rainy season was apparently “more authentic.”
Martin cancelled the flight completely.
Without a departure date, the relationship changed.
Breakfast became groceries. Sunset dinners became delivery. Ploy stopped dressing for the beach, and Martin discovered that living in Phuket involved significantly more laundry than Instagram had suggested.
After three months, they were no longer having a holiday romance.
They were sharing an electricity bill.
The arguments were ordinary. Air-conditioning. Dishes. Martin working from the sofa. Ploy leaving wet towels on the bed.
One evening, she asked when he planned to return home.
Martin looked surprised.
“I thought you wanted me to stay.”
“I did.”
“And now?”
Ploy looked around the condo.
“Now you stay.”
Two weeks later, Martin booked a last-minute flight to Europe.
It cost considerably more than the original return ticket.
By then, it was the cheapest part of staying.
